Apple is known for continuously innovating and upgrading its iPad Pro line-up.

After the release of the M4 iPad Pro in 2024, attention quickly turned to what the Cupertino giant has in store for 2025.

Leaks and rumours suggest that the 8th generation iPad Pro will bring substantial upgrades, particularly in performance and display technology.

Here’s what we know so far.

When will the new iPad Pro be released?

Based on current reports from both Nicolás Álvarez and @aaronp613 on X, the new Apple iPad Pro (8th Gen) is expected to launch in late 2025.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple appears to be shifting to a more regular upgrade cycle for its Pro line, similar to its iPhone and Mac lineups, so we could see the new iPad Pro arrive in the second half of the year.

Gurman also reports that the new entry-level iPads (yes, plural) and the new iPad Air models are coming this year, likely in April. However, there’s no word on the new iPad Pro, so we assume this one is still believed to be released much later.

This release time seems to be further confirmed by a report from Ming-Chi Kuo, according to which “the iPad Pro equipped with the M5 processor is expected to enter mass production in 2H25”.

How much will the new iPad Pro cost?

While exact pricing for the 8th Gen iPad Pro has not yet been confirmed, we can expect it to be similar to the current iPad Pro models, which start at £999/$999 for the 11-inch model and £1,299/$1,299 for the 12.9-inch model.

However, with rumored upgrades like the M5 chip and OLED displays, there could be a slight increase in price, depending on the configuration.

What specs and features will the new iPad Pro have?

The iPad Pro (8th Gen) is expected to feature major hardware and software enhancements. Let’s break down the anticipated specs.

    Design

The design of the 8th Gen iPad Pro is likely to remain consistent with recent models, featuring slim bezels, a flat-edge aluminum frame, and a sleek, modern look.

However, there may be minor refinements, such as thinner bezels and even lighter materials to enhance portability.

Apple may also introduce new colours or finishes to refresh the aesthetic appeal of the device.

    Display

One of the most anticipated upgrades is the shift to an OLED display. According to South Korean publication The Elec, Apple is expected to launch at least one new OLED iPad Pro this year. The same publication claims that the models will only be slightly modified from last year’s designs.

This new display technology might offer deeper blacks, higher contrast, and better colour accuracy than the current Liquid Retina XDR display.

The iPad Pro 8th Gen is expected to come in 11-inch and 13-inch variants, both of which could support 120Hz ProMotion for smooth scrolling and responsiveness.

    Performance

The 8th Gen iPad Pro will reportedly be powered by the M5 chip (via wccftech.com), Apple’s next-generation silicon. This chip will likely be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process for improved performance and power efficiency.

The M5 chip is expected to offer better CPU and GPU performance than the current M4 chip, with a focus on AI and machine learning tasks, making it ideal for professionals and power users.

In addition to the M5 chip, we can expect up to 16GB of RAM in higher-end models, and storage options may go up to 2TB for users needing ample space for media, apps, and files.

According to DigiTimes, Apple might also introduce a self-developed 5G modem in new iPads by 2025.

    Cameras

Apple is expected to enhance the iPad Pro’s camera system to support even better photography and videography.

The rear camera array could see improved LiDAR capabilities for augmented reality (AR) applications, while the front-facing camera will likely support Center Stage, Apple’s feature that automatically keeps the user in frame during video calls.

Improved ProRes video recording is also expected, making the iPad Pro even more appealing to filmmakers and content creators.

    Battery & Charging

With the more power-efficient M5 chip, the iPad Pro 8th Gen could offer even better battery life than its predecessors.

Apple may also introduce faster charging options, possibly supporting Thunderbolt 5 for quicker data transfer and charging.

As always, the USB-C port will remain a key feature, supporting a wide range of accessories and external devices.

    Software

The iPad Pro 8th Gen will run iPadOS 18, which is expected to bring a slew of new features and performance upgrades.

Apple’s focus on AI and machine learning in iPadOS 18 will enhance multitasking, with Stage Manager allowing users to easily manage multiple apps on the screen.

Additionally, new Apple Intelligence features could improve workflows for professionals in creative fields, with advanced tools for video editing, design, and development.

The new iPad Pro is likely to rank among the best iPads, but will it be one of the best tablets you can buy? Time will tell.
